  DataSheet KIT004

It takes its name from Idunn, a northern goddess of youth. The Idunn consists of a 18 cm long Woofer and a woven polypropylene cone - U18RNX / P and a 27 mm aluminum / magnesium dome with a DXT ® lens - 27TBCD / GB-DXT.

The Idunn speaker is based on a standard 20 liter ventilated cabinet. This cabinet was chosen to give people an easy start in building a speaker. See the PDF file for the cabinet drawings. Ask your local speaker dealer if he can help you get it, if you dont plan to build it yourself. The important thing to remember when building this is to maintain the width of the deflector and the internal volume of the original container. Adding braces to stiffen the cabinet is a good suggestion for the advanced builder to bring the speaker a little further.

The amount of filling and tuning of the doors is based on measurements and extensive listening. The cabinet is filled with 250 g of filling. The filling is evenly distributed in the box, but kept away from the door opening to allow free air movement. This is to ensure that the airflow noise remains as low as possible. The length of the light is 16 cm, including the flanged end and the internal diameter is 5 cm. This provides a 38 Hz port tuning which provides a smooth low frequency roll-off.

U18RNX / P is an 18 cm (6.5 ") High Fidelity Woofer with an injection-molded metal frame, designed for bass reflex and transmission lines. The new Curv cone, a braided polypropylene with excellent internal damping along with moving parts perfectly combined, it provides a more uniform and extended frequency response. The large magnet system provides a good transient response, while the cantilevered back plate together with the long and light copper-clad aluminum cannon allow for an extreme excursion of the coil with a low distortion. The bullet-shaped phase plug reduces the compression due to temperature variations in the moving coil, avoids resonance problems that occur in the volume between the dust cap and the pole and increases the long-term power management capacity Extremely rigid and stable injection-molded metal basket keeps the critical components in perfect condition lineament. The large windows in the basket both above and below the spider minimize sound reflection, air flow noise and cavity resonance. This driver uses Seas SpiderRing ® technology.

27TBCD / GB-DXT is a high definition aluminum / magnesium dome tweeter with DXT ® lens. An optimally shaped dome and a wide SONOMEX surround, both made by SEAS, ensure excellent performance and uniformity. The compensation magnet increases sensitivity and reduces the stray magnetic field and allows use near CRT screens. A fine mesh grill protects the diaphragm. The rigid and stable rear chamber with optimal acoustic damping allows the tweeter to be used with moderately low crossover frequencies. This revolutionary DXT ® tweeter addresses the main issues related to directivity control in traditional speaker designs. DXT ® solves several well-known problems concerning; directivity control, off-axis response, integration with midrange units and diaphragm diffractions.

The crossover is symmetrical with a crossover frequency of 2.2kHz. The crossover point was chosen so that the driver directivity made the overall power response extremely fluid, as can be seen in the measurements. The complexity of the crossover has been kept as low as possible without sacrificing any of the audible performance. This can be achieved, due to the very smooth response of the drivers. On the woofer there is a simple 2nd order network, and on the tweeter there is an equally simple 3rd order network and an L-pad to cut the tweeter sensitivity. Together they align the driver phase in an excellent way and give a smooth transition to the driver. The driver rolloff is steep enough to allow them to work effortlessly even at high power levels.

Electrical and Acoustic Measurements

Measurements are taken in free field at 1 meter on the tweeter axis.

frequenza

As shown in the figure, the average sensitivity is 85 dB and the response is between ± 1.5 dB. The black curve shows the response with the tweeter connected with opposite polarity. The deep and symmetrical notch, when the tweeter is connected with reverse polarity, shows that the drivers are in phase across the entire crossover region.

The off-axis response of Idunn is shown above. Here we really see the beauty of the DXT tweeter. The power response is perfectly uniform over the entire frequency range, even at 60 off-axis. This gives a huge point of impact, while still allowing pin-point imaging. It also maintains the tone balance of the speaker over the entire listening room.

The following figure shows the 2nd and 3rd order harmonic distortion with an output of 96 dB at 1 m. The general distortion is very low and makes the music reproduced very clean and without coloring.
