  DataSheet KIT DXUN + ONDERON

Dxun & Onderon is a three-way diffuser with a tower sub woofer developed in height. Optimized for easy positioning in the environment, it has the peculiarity of being made in two separate pieces. Dxun, from computer jargon can be defined as the system that stands on the solid shoulders of, in art Onderon. The possibility of orienting Dxun with respect to the horizontal plane where it is placed, means that the entire diffuser assumes undoubted qualities in terms of acoustic collocation in the environment. Onderon reflects the philosophy of the line array reduced and re-proportioned for the purpose. Long-limbed tower optimized for medium-small and not only environments, for listening to music but also for home theater systems.

The loudspeakers used are optimized for the realization of a ductile system and open to new HT upgrades. The possibility of having the medium-high compartment completely detached from the remaining sub-woofer section allows the system, in addition to easy adjustment and fine tuning, to expand the cinema system satellites, limiting costs and optimizing timbre consistency.

Dxun is a two-way speaker loaded in bass reflex with rear duct. The speakers chosen for the Dxun project are: the Scan Speak 12w8524g00 mid-woofer and the Tb Speaker 28-847sd tweeter

The 12w-8524g00 from Scan Speak s Discovey series is a mid-woofer with a useful diameter of 86mm (4 ") with a fiberglass cone like the entire Discovery mid-woofer series. The peculiarity of these speakers, in addition to the cone, is the high quality / price ratio. The Danish giant wanted to expand its catalog, this time, preferring the lower end of the quality range, optimizing the costs and reflecting the palatability of the product.

The Tang Band Speaker tweeter is a well-known knowledge of the high-end world, several manufacturers have used it to testify to the success of the product by the Chinese company. Contrary to what one might think, the minimal dimensions do not compromise the sonic yield.

We could call it the “kinder egg” of transducers used for high frequencies, the TB 28-847SD has an egg shape, as evidenced by the photo of the resonant dome mounted at the back. This shell, in addition to the nice shape, has a small rear hole. The hole is made to prevent the shell from acting as a real explosive device during the flight from China to Italy. It has been closed with a drop of hot glue to prevent a resonance frequency that is different from that estimated by the manufacturer.

The impedance curve of 28-847 sd confirms the presence of fluid iron in the air gap, given the high losses manifested by the low amplitude of the impedance peak. Just 11Ohm for the Zmax centered at a fs of about 700Hz measured. Soft 28mm dome, 90dB of sensitivity (declared on the datasheet), continuous 6 Ohm resistance, we hope to make this tweeter, a "kinder egg" with surprise.

Finally, Onderon, in all its height of 106.53cm to give shape to a 5 ”tower sub woofer array. This time it is always a Tb Speaker, but with different features. The w5-1138smf is a sub-woofer with a paper cone, a rubber edge and a sheet metal basket that make this sub-woofer a transducer with good characteristics and an excellent market price. The parameters declared by the manufacturer suggest the loading in a closed box (Qts = 0.49), and can also opt for a Bass Reflex with dual slope alignment. The sensitivity of only 82dB per single unit increases by more than 6dB for four of these transducers connected in series / parallel.

From the CAD drawing of Dxun & Onderon a speaker is "discovered" from the proportions of a mid-tower, but analyzing it from another perspective, it could be considered a stand bookshelf, which (the stand), if necessary becomes sub- woofer.

Front baffle of only 18cm, depth of 31.5cm and total height of about 132cm, make this diffuser a veritable column that can be easily placed in the room. From the design we see how the "head" of the diffuser, as well as the medium-high part, can be easily used as a stand bookshelf, also thanks to the possibility of electrically disconnecting the latter from the group of sub-woofers. The material used for the construction of the cabinet and the now usual 22mm MDF. It is also possible to opt for 22mm birch plywood increasing, however, the construction cost.

Special attention was paid to the thickness of the sub-woofer cabinet to prevent it from echoing due to the vibrations induced. A 22mm thickness already gives a good result even if it does not reach the excellent level of thicknesses from about 30mm, being careful to free the rear part of the loudspeakers with a daisy-chain milling so as not to intubate them.

The sound-absorbing material plays a fundamental role both in key terms and in the loss / damping of the diffuser. On the base we find 4 panels of high density material with a thickness of three cm. On the side walls the density decreases but the quadrature increases, also including the panel opposite the speakers. The material used is the classic three cm polyester.

A speaker that does not pay attention to subtleties and artifacts of circumstance. Elegant in its proportions, a little less in the finish, but this is a factor of secondary importance since it can be finished in countless different ways and with one own taste. For those who need a non-invasive solution in medium / large environments, with a fair amount of space from the back wall (at least 50cm), to whom an imposing and telluric speaker is needed, Korriban is ready to implement these and other characteristics of sure interest even for the most demanding user. Obviously not all roses, the placement of the sub and the duct on the side and rear walls respectively complicates the positioning in the environment. It will be necessary to take into due account the space to be dedicated to this diffuser in order to provide for half a meter (in reality it can even reach 40-35cm from the back wall with a good yield) from the back wall and about 40 cm per side. By getting too close to the back wall and the side walls, in addition to a swelling of the low range, there will be a sensation of flattening the sound and a decrease in the vertical and horizontal soundstage which in a single word translates into a decrease in the scene reproduced.
